OCT. 30, 2009 (Denver, CO)—Representing SCTE Region 12 and the SCTE New England Chapter, Bob Colwell of Comcast Cable Communications and Portsmouth, N.H., outpaced a
field of 28 competitors and captured the 19th Annual SCTE International Cable-Tec Games overall title Thursday evening in Denver.
The International Games, sponsored by CommScope and SCTE, comprised competitors from across the United States and Canada who had qualified to compete after winning their local competitions.
SCTE conducts the popular International Games each year as part of SCTE Cable-Tec Expo®, SCTE’s flagship event. Expo 2009 began Wednesday and concludes this afternoon at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.
For Colwell, persistence paid off, having finished fourth overall in the International Games in 2007 in Orlando, Fla., and third overall in 2008 in Philadelphia.
At Expo 2009, Ron Poole of Comcast, the SCTE Golden Gate Chapter, and Scotts Valley, Calif., took second-place overall. He was representing SCTE Region 1. Meanwhile, Bobby Singer of Comcast, the SCTE South Florida Chapter, and Hobe Sound, Fla., achieved third-place overall. His chapter is located in SCTE Region 9.
The first-place winners of the International Games’ six contests were:
Meter Reading: Keith Jensen of Cablevision, Hackettstown, N.J., and the SCTE New Jersey Chapter, SCTE Region 11
MTDR: Eric VonQuintus of Time Warner Cable, Hutto, Texas, and the SCTE Hill Country Chapter, Region 4
Fiber Splicing: Ibel Castillo of Bright House Networks, Riverview, Fla., and the SCTE Central Florida Chapter, Region 9
Cable Splicing: Ron Poole of Comcast
Drop Connection: Fred Rollins of Cox Communications, Omaha, Neb., and the SCTE Great Plains Chapter, Region 5
Cable Jeopardy: James Stary of Time Warner Cable, Brook Park, Ohio, and the SCTE Ohio Valley Chapter, Region 7
The hosts of the evening’s six contests were: AFL Telecommunications; CommScope Inc.; Corning Cable Systems; Corning Gilbert Inc.; Greenlee, A Textron Company; JDSU; Jones/NCTI; PPC; Radiodetection; Thomas & Betts Corp.; Times Fiber Amphenol; and Trilithic Inc.
At the close of the International Games, newly elected SCTE Board of Directors Chairman Bob Foote presented the winners with their gold, silver, and bronze medals.
